Boston Legal Gets it Right!

The Sept 29 episode of TV show Boston Legal really showed the truth about big pharma and their money making activities at the expense of true help. This article on the blog called "Side Effects of Antidepressants, Antipsychotics, Psychostimulants, Hypnotics and More", tells you even more about it: Big Pharma (PhRMA) Hammered on Boston Legal.

Here is one of the best quotes from the show:
Alan, “The fact is the U.S. pharmaceutical industry spends almost twice as much on promotion as it does on research and development. That’s obscene! American television viewers see as much as 16 hours of prescription advertising each year. 16 hours! That’s more time than most people spend at the movies. The fact is that they invent diseases like Social Phobia, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, to sell mind altering drugs.”
Wow! Hollywood gets it right.

Suicide Risk Increases With Medication, Not Just Anti-Depressants

More studies are coming out showing that drugs other than anti-depressants can cause suicide.

Regardless of the purpose for which a drug is prescribed, there is potential for psychiatric side effects if it passes the blood-brain barrier. Drugs for asthma, weight control, quitting smoking, and even certain heart medications may have potential for changing a person’s behavior and mood.
Read this article and next time you are prescribed a drug maybe you might wish to explore other, less dangerous, treatments: Suicide Risk Increases With Medication, Not Just Anti-Depressants

What the Church of Scientology wants its members to do - (cont)

The tools the Church uses to help promote the idea of a drug-free life include the "Truth about Drugs Video", the Truth about Drugs booklets and the Truth about Drugs Public Service Announcements.

Other cool programs include the Drug Free Marshals and the Drug Free Ambassadors.

Here are some facts about the campaign:
  • 385 anti-drug partnerships forged in cities and towns
  • Booklets distributed to 2,253.000 people in high drug usage zones
  • 111 million reached with the Truth About Drugs message in the last year.
  • 8,000 booklets a day distributed in high usage neighborhoods.
  • Pledge drives (pledging to be drug free) and youth rallies reach 3 million youth a week in high risk schools
  • PSAs airing in cafes, theaters, bars and clubs across eleven top drug consumption nations.
This is all being done by Scientologists who volunteer their time to help their communities.

What the Church of Scientology wants its members to do - 2

A few posts ago I told you about the human rights activities that the Church of Scientology encourages its members to get involved with. In this post I'm going to talk about the the anti-drug campaign that the Church encourages us to support.

To begin with here is an article on the New York Coordinator for the Foundation for a Drug-Free World: Scientologists In Action: Meghan Fialkoff. This is a great interview where Meghan shares her reasons for helping keep kids and adults of drugs. I particularly like her comment: "When you know there are things going on in the world which are heading in a bad direction, and you know you have the exact tools to handle those situations, help people, and save lives, if you then don't do anything about it you are the one who has to live with that."

Prescription Drugs More Deadly Than Cocaine, Heroin, Amphetamines

Here is a startling article about just how deadly prescription drugs can be: Prescription Drugs More Deadly Than Cocaine, Heroin, Amphetamines.

More people die from prescription drugs each year than from cocaine, heroin and amphetamines put together! In fact the medical profession itself estimates that about 100,000 people die each year from "correct" prescriptions but critics estimate that it is much higher (See Death by Medicine for the details).

Hopefully this will make you think twice before blindly accepting the opinion of "authorities" regarding the safety of medical drugs.

More evidence that ADHD is a fake

Just published in the British Medical Journal are the results of a study that shows a clear connection between hyperactivity in children and chemical additives in foods.

Removing junk food from a child's diet is a simple treatment that has no side-effects and plenty of positive effects compared with drugs which have horrendous side-effects such as nervousness, insomnia, anorexia; nausea; dizziness; palpitations; headache, cardiac arrhythmia; abdominal pain etc., etc.

A study by the Montreal Children's Hospital found that after five years hyperactive children who received drugs (either Ritalin or Chloropromazine) did not differ significantly from children who had not received them. Although it appeared that hyperactive kids treated with Ritalin were initially more manageable, the degree of improvement and emotional adjustment was essentially identical at the end of five years to that seen in a group of kids who had received no medication at all.

Of course the big difference between the kids who took no drugs and those that took the drugs was that pharmaceutical companies made no profit from the kids who took no drugs.  And the non-drug kids didn't get any of the horrible side-effects.

So why are these drugs used at all if the end result is the same as if the kids took nothing?  As the legal profession says "cui bono?"  (who benefits?)

The life of a 15 year old Scientologist

Here is an interview with Mickey, an Italian teenager who is also a Scientologist. Raise by Catholic and Scientologist parents she has a tolerant attitude toward religions. Schooled in study technology, she speaks three languages and can read recipes in a fourth (she wants to be a Chef).

Here is her story: "It takes smarts to think for yourself- it only takes a semi-good memory to act like everyone else."

Medical Ethics: Conflict of Interest

Thanks to Jim Gatos for pointing me to this article: Are Perks Compromising MD Ethics?. Here is the video (forgive the ad that it starts with.)

Of course the answer to the question, "Are perks compromising MD Ethics?" is clearly, "Yes!" And it's "Yes!" to the tune of $57 billion a year. That means the drug companies are spending more on corrupting doctors than they are on any other form of marketing.

And consider this: if they can afford to spend $57 billion on perks and "consulting" fees to doctors then how much are they making from these drugs?

Now don't get me wrong, drugs have their place. If a person is dying of cancer and needs a strong pain killer to help make their last few days bearable then I say give 'em the drug. If someone just had a major operation and needs a pain killer then go ahead. But I call it criminal when a doctor prescribes highly addictive drugs such as Oxycodone or Methadone when the patient does not need such dangerous medication and the doctor prescribes them simply because one drug company gives him better perks or more money than another.

That may have been the case in the video and the result was the death of a 12-year-old girl.

I think it's time Congress acted and the proposed law on disclosure of payments to doctors by drug companies should be passed as soon as possible.

What do you think?
