Darren asked What is an "Illegal PC"?
It's a term used to refer to someone who, due to psychiatric abuse, is in a state which makes it unwise for them to receive Scientology Auditing. They have been so messed up by damaging psychiatric treatments, such as electro-convulsive treatment (ECT), brain operations or the use of damaging psychiatric drugs, that any attempt to assist them spiritually in a way that has them looking inward is liable to push them over the edge.
It is not a permanent status. There are things a person can do to demonstrate that they have recovered sufficiently that they can safely receive Scientology Auditing, at which point they can.
In the meantime, they participate in all the other services and practices of Scientology.
Definitions:
Illegal = in this usage of the word, it does not refer to the laws of the land, but to the rules of Scientology Churches. "Illegal" in this sense means a violation of Church rules, for example, it is against the rules to audit someone who has not sufficiently recovered from abusive psychiatric treatment, so it is called "illegal".
PC = Pre-Clear = a person who has not yet achieved the State of Clear and is undergoing or planning to undergo Scientology Auditing with the goal of achieving the state.
I hope that answers your question, Darren.

Bad Memories
Here is a comment thread that I thought might be of interest.

Grahame, would you please look at this link? I saw this at the BBC RSS feeds.
Is this supposed to be "auditing by prescription"?
Heart pill to banish bad memories
I think it's bad news...

Hey Jim,
I agree - very bad news.
It looks to me, from what the article says, that the conclusions the researchers have come to are erroneous.
Surely a more logical conclusion is that the drugs merely made the subjects less aware of their environment. The fact that they reacted less to present-time "startling" stimuli shows this. It proves nothing about their memories.
The experiments with animals also show this. As the article says, "Experiments on animals has shown beta blockers can interfere with how the brain makes sense of frightening events." The creatures were confused. The drugs disoriented them. It had nothing to do with erasing memories.
Seems to me that someone is trying to get a nice big grant from a drug company.

Hey Jim,
One other thing.
Scientology Auditing does not erase memories as the article implies that the drugs do.
Auditing erases the trauma associated with the memories. The memories themselves are still there, it's the pain and suffering associated with them that is gone.
If you had an accident and the memory was completely removed then you could easily make the same mistakes again and repeat the accident. If you have the trauma removed then you can remember exactly what happened and thereby learn from your mistakes.
I think that's a much better solution.

So what do we do in Scientology?
I was trying to think of a simple way to answer this question and then I saw that Desi did it for me in her blog post today.
She said a lot, but one particular item I thought deserved emphasis:
I've found that myself. There is something in your life that has affected you for years and years and in a couple of hours of Scientology Auditing it's handled, gone, no-longer-a-problem, fixed. That is an example of the magic of Scientology.

The ratio on this is amazing:
Cumulative hours of time spent worrying or grappling with or refusing to confront these three problems on my own: 36 years
Cumulative time spent resolving these three situations in or out of counseling since last weekend: 8 hours
